Young children with severely protruding teeth may benefit from early orthodontic treatment

Young Children between the ages of 6 and 10 that have buck teeth have a higher risk of dental trauma. They may benefit from early orthodontic treatment according to a report that was recently published in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics. The study found that 33% of children who were treated for protruding teeth were less likely to have dental trauma like chipped, broken or knocked out permanent teeth.

It is recommended that all children get a check up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. This way, if any issues are detected early, appropriate treatment can be started.

Parents should understand that children go through what orthodontist call and “ugly duckling phase” which is when permanent teeth begin to show and they seem too large for the child’s mouth. Most children will grow into their teeth but it is best to have an evaluation by an orthodontist to make sure.

If you have a young child that may need early orthodontic treatment, please call Dr. Joffre at dotSmile at 617-533-8058 for a consultation.
